As our pets age, their health care needs change. There is no set age when our pets officially become "Senior Citizens". It is a gradual process and is influenced by several factors such as breed, genetics, nutrition, veterinary care, whether the pet is indoor or outdoor and so on. Outdoor pets are exposed to more risk factors like diseases, fighting, and the losing battle with vehicles.

What to expect
As your pet moves into their senior years, you will start to notice some subtile changes. It is important to understand normal aging verses abnormal changes in your pets health. Every six month check-ups are recommended for elderly pets to catch any underlying health problems that may not be obvious. Here are some changes you may notice with an older pet.
-
Increased hours of sleep
-
Graying of the coat, especially the muzzle
-
Dental disease (See your veterinarian)
-
Hearing and/or vision loss
-
Arthritis (See your veterinarian)
-
Muscle shrinkage/weakness

Things to think about....
Diet- As pets age their nutritional needs change as well. Consider a senior or mature pet food. www.hillspet.com
Bedding- Comfortable beds can help ease the discomfort of stiff joints and arthritis. www.tempurpedic.com
Ramps- Getting in and out of the car and up and down from the bed can become difficult for older pets. www.discountramps.com
